Painting the floor is the last station and floors can be treated in different ways.

Painting floors

Flooring is always important to make a choice.

How to varnish your floors

Of course it also depends on your budget what you have for it.

Unfortunately, everyone cannot afford that.

Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives these days.

In the past you had either carpet or wooden floors. In addition, a lot of sail was also used.

This was mainly used in damp areas.

Painting a floor is also an option.

It is important that you use a good paint or varnish for this.

After all, you walk over it every day.

So that paint has to be hard enough to withstand that.

Firstly, that paint must have a high wear resistance.

Secondly, children also play on such a floor.

This can cause scratches.

The paint must therefore also be scratch resistant.

A third point is that you must be able to remove stains quickly and easily.

These three elements must be present in a paint or varnish.

Otherwise it makes no sense to treat a floor.

Treat floors well before then

If these floors are new or treated, you must do some preparatory work beforehand.

By this I mean doing a number of things and points that you should pay attention to.

First, you need to clean the floor properly.

This is also called degreasing.

Do this with a proper all-purpose cleaner.

Read the article about all-purpose cleaner here.

When this floor is dry you have to sand it.

If it concerns a new floor and you want to continue to see the grain and the wood structure, you will have to take sandpaper with a grain size of 320 or higher.

It is better to sand with a scotchbrite with a fine structure.

This prevents scratches on your floors.

A scotchbrite is a flexible sponge with which you can sand fine.

Read the article about scotch brite here.

While sanding, it is wise to open all windows.

This removes a lot of dust.

After sanding, make sure everything is dust-free.

So first vacuum properly: also take the walls with you.

After all, the dust also rises and then vacuum the floors well.

Then take a tack cloth and wipe the floors well so that you are sure that all the dust has disappeared.

Then close windows and doors and don’t go there again.

Only when you start painting the floors   do you go back into that space.

You can do your preparations in another room: stirring the lacquer, pouring the lacquer into your paint tray, and so on.

To do this, take a special roller that is suitable for this.

lacquer the wood with a transparent high-gloss or egg-gloss lacquer

You can first coat the wood with a transparent high-gloss lacquer or a silk-gloss lacquer.

This is a PU parquet lacquer.

It is transparent so that you can see the structure of your floor.

This paint is on an alkyd basis and has an increased scratch, impact and wear resistance.

Another big advantage is that this paint is easy to clean.

So if you ever spill, it’s easy to remove that stain with a cloth.

At a temperature of 20 degrees and a relative humidity of 65%, the paint is already dust-dry after 1 hour.

This does not mean that you can already walk over it.

The floors can then be painted over after 24 hours.

If it concerns a new floor, you will have to apply three layers for an optimal result.

Don’t forget to sand between those layers and make everything dust free.

See the paragraph above.

The floor made of wood with a semi-transparent in high-gloss, satin-gloss or matt

You can also give a floor a color.

This is also called wood lacquer Pu.

Wood lacquer PU is based on urethane alkaline resins.

You can still see the structure somewhat, but with a color.

This paint also has an increased scratch, impact and wear resistance.

In addition, easy to clean.

The drying process is dust-dry after 1 hour at 20 degrees and a relative humidity of 65%.

This varnish can be painted over after 24 hours.

If it concerns a new floor, you will have to apply three layers for an optimal end result.

If it concerns an existing floor, 1 layer or 2 layers is sufficient.

This Pu wood lacquer comes in different colours: dark oak, walnut, sap mahogany, pine, light oak, medium oak and teak.

Paint floors with a water-based lacquer in semi-gloss.

Floors can of course also be varnished with an acrylic-based varnish.

Or also called water-based.

This lacquer is transparent or you can also call it clear.

Acrylic parquet lacquer is a lacquer that you can dilute with water.

This paint has wear, impact and scratch-resistant properties.

Another advantage is that this acrylic varnish does not yellow.

By the way, that is a general property of acrylic paint.

Spills on the floors are not a problem with this acrylic lacquer.

You simply wipe it off with a cloth

The acrylic parquet lacquer is dust-dry after 1 hour at a temperature of 20 degrees and a relative humidity of 65%.

The paint can be painted over after only six hours.

With new floors you will have to apply three layers for an optimal result.

With an existing floor this is 1 or 2 layers.

Paint the woodwork and give it a completely different color

If you want to lacquer the woodwork and also give it a completely different color, you will have to take a floor lacquer for this.

And in particular a floor lacquer PU.

This is a lacquer based on polyurethane-modified alkyd resin.

This means that the top layer becomes rock hard.

This lacquer has a very increased wear resistance.

In addition, this paint is scratch resistant.

What this paint also possesses is Thixotropic.

Thixotropic is a substance when shear stress in the viscosity decreases.

I’ll explain it differently.

When you shake a mixture, the liquid changes into a gel state.

When there is rest, this gel becomes liquid again.

So this addition keeps the paint extra hard and wear-resistant.

This paint is easy to clean.

The paint is dust-dry after 2 hours at 20 degrees and 65 % relative humidity.

After 24 hours you can paint the floors over.

With this paint you will first have to apply a primer.

Mix this primer evenly into the top coat.
